Music Trends

Looking at other bands within the alternative rock genre, we have created a list of common features that were easy to to recognise within these music videos.Editing EffectsOne of our finding were that a few music videos used different coloured effects, such as black and white and sepia. This is used to fit the style of the music and to help created the star image of the band. Another reason this effect was used is because the music is low tone and has a moderate tempo. This could suggest that the music video has been made with this effect to match the ton of the song.  One video that used the black and white effect was Arctic Monkeys - One For The Road.

Another music video we looked at is Kasabian - Fire. This also uses the same black and white effect, as well as a sepia effect. We believe the sepia effect has been used to create an aged effect, as this makes the props look part of the music video. The black and white effect has then been used to create the CCTV effects as the robbery takes place.

Colours In the Miles Kane - Rearrange music video, we see a range of different colours used. The bright colours reflect the fast tempo of the song whilst the dark backgrounds reflect the song when it is at a low tempo. This means that the beat matches the visuals and makes the music video make sense.
However there is no narrative to the video and this leaves questions in the audiences mind.

Magazine Advert Analysis – Daft Punk

Magazine Advert Analysis – Daft Punk ‘Random Access Memories'

Here is a magazine advertisement for the latest ‘Daft Punk’ album ‘Random Access Memories’.

This advertisement is quite a teaser for fans of the electronic dance duo, as the first thing the audience would see is the two iconic masks/helmets from the two members of Daft Punk. This is something that would be the instantly recognizable from the advertisement, and would get the attention of the audience straight away.

Of course this advertisement does not reveal much yet, and the minimalism of it is still very effective in what it does. The text on the page is foreign, which translates to “Access the QR code and uncover the mystery of the new album by DAFT PUNK! Available in all stores May”. This is a very good teaser for the audience, and with the integration with the QR code the audience can also interact and ‘uncover the mystery’. This tagline will especially attract the audience and make them want to find out more.

Lip Sync Technique

Music Video - First Lip Sync Task - It Was A Good Day (Ice Cube)

We started by choosing a song we could all lip sync to. We chose the song It Was A Good Day - Ice Cube. We chose this song because we could all lip sync to it as the words were not that complicated and the song was rather slow, which meant everyone could keep up. To create our music video we then went to our location and filmed the different camera angles. We found the song on a mobile and then held the camera whist filming. The person in the shot would lip sync to the music, which we would overlay with the real track throughout the editing process.

We then took the footage and uploaded it to Final Cut to start the editing the video. To create the music video we had to use the main technique of lining the sound from the camera shots, to the sound on the actual mp3 track. To do this we selected the sound wave display button at the bottom of the screen, which brought up the waves on the mp3 file.

we then created markers on the sound wave and uploaded the footage. The sound from the footage was then also marked at the same points and we then had to link up the markers from the footage with the video. This should have created a clear overlap, which would have meant the footage would be exactly on top of the sound at the correct points. However in some of our shots we did not put the mobile, with the m3 on next to the camera and therefore it was very difficult to match the sound to the video.

Audience Profile - Pond

The band Pond is an Australian band. People who enjoy the music of the band are most likely to be people from Australia, as this will be the type of music they are used to listening to, since the artists are Australian. This will therefore be the bands primary audience, however the secondary audience, will be people across other countries that like this genre of psychedelic rock.

The primary target audience will be mainly Australian males, aged 21 – 40. This is because the band are quite young and are Australian, so therefore can relate to a younger audience and the audience and the fan base which are in their country.
Their secondary target audience will therefore be males, 21 – 40 who live in other countries, but still listen to this band. Men up to 40 I think will also like the music of the band as it will be similar to the genre of music they grew up with and therefore is something they can relate to.

Another section of their main audience will be people who listen to the band Tame Impala. This is because they are a band that are very similar to Pond, meaning people who enjoy their music, will probably enjoy the same music as Pond. Also some of the band members from Tame Impala are also in the band Pond. This will means that fans of these artists will enjoy the bands music as well.

Questionnaire Results

Above are the results from the questionnaire we sent out to retrieve some audience information. The information we received back wasn't totally successful as some people provided immature and unsuitable answers. We did get some good information though, that should be able to help us with making decisions with our music video and influence the final outcome.
